ITIL (Version 5) Explained: What’s New and What It Means for You
By Judy Sanker, ITIL5, PMP
ITIL® (Version 5) unifies Digital Products and Services into one lifecycle, giving IT teams a single, AI-native framework to design, build, operate, and improve together. Announced by PeopleCert in early 2026, it’s built to reduce handoff gaps, sharpen customer experience, and help organizations move faster — all without abandoning the ITIL knowledge professionals already have.
A Unified Lifecycle for Products and Services
Many organizations manage products and services separately, creating gaps in delivery, reliability, and customer experience. In reality, the two are interdependent: products are what organizations build, and services are how that value is delivered and supported.
ITIL (Version 5) closes that gap with a single Digital Product and Service Lifecycle and a shared set of Lifecycle Activities — better aligning how organizations discover, design, acquire, build, transition, operate, deliver, and support digital products and services.
ITIL (Version 5) Foundation Certification
ITIL (Version 5) Foundation is the first course in the new ITIL certification scheme and a prerequisite for every other ITIL (Version 5) course. It introduces the key concepts of digital product and service management and establishes a common language for effective practice across organizations. Learn more about ITIL (Version 5) Foundation.
The course covers the ITIL framework’s guiding principles, core models, and fundamental concepts, and explains how they support a focus on value, outcomes, and experience. Across 18 hours of instruction, learners come away understanding how value is co-created through effective product and service management — and how to apply ITIL guidance to improve performance, collaboration, and outcomes in their own organization.
Transitioning from ITIL v3 or ITIL 4
If you’re coming from ITIL v3, the recommended path is the full ITIL (Version 5) Foundation course.
If you hold an ITIL 4 Foundation certificate, it remains a valid prerequisite for the Advanced ITIL (Version 5) courses. We still recommend a refresher on ITIL 4 concepts before moving on — which is why the ITIL (Version 5) Foundation course covers ITIL 4 fundamentals as a review and integrates the new ITIL (Version 5) concepts alongside them: comprehensive, but easy to follow.
ITIL 4-certified students can also take the shorter ITIL (Version 5) Foundation Bridge exam — 20 questions instead of 40 — which prepares you for Advanced ITIL (Version 5) courses at a discount.
What Stays the Same, and What’s New
Staying the same
The ITIL Guiding Principles, the Four Dimensions of Service Management, the ITIL Service Value System, and the 34 ITIL Practices — with only minor terminology changes.

- One unified Digital Product and Service Lifecycle across all lifecycle activities

Frequently Asked Questions
What is ITIL (Version 5)?
ITIL (Version 5) is the newest version of the ITIL framework, unifying digital product and service management into one AI-native lifecycle model. PeopleCert announced it in January 2026.
Do I need to retake ITIL Foundation if I’m already ITIL 4 certified?
No. Your ITIL 4 Foundation certificate remains a valid prerequisite for Advanced ITIL (Version 5) courses. Many professionals instead take the shorter ITIL (Version 5) Foundation Bridge exam to update their credential.
Is ITIL (Version 5) backward compatible with ITIL 4?
Yes. ITIL (Version 5) is designed to be backward compatible, so existing ITIL 4 knowledge, experience, and certifications remain fully relevant.
